In left to right order (in the photo):Derek Kingshott - Derek graduated from Zeeland West in 2008 as an accomplished student-athlete participating in basketball, football and track and field. In basketball, Derek was a two time all conference player in the 2007 and 2008 season and was named to the BCAM All-State Team following the 2007-08 season. Similar to basketball, Derek was a two time all conference football player, two time member of the Holland Sentinel All-Area team, member of the Grand Rapids Press Dream Team in 2006 and a member of the Zeeland West State Championship football team in 2006. On the track, Derek was all conference in 2008 and was a member of the Track and Field State Championship Relay teams in both the 1600 and 3200. Boys and Girls Varsity West TrackThe Zeeland West Boys Varsity Track team scored 98.5 against Unity on Tuesday (Unity scored 38.5). Zeeland West Varsity held first place for almost all of the evening. The night saw many Dux wins. Jr. Clayton Ramsdell, who set a new PR of 6’4” on the high jump; Sr. Ben Greshaw, who placed first in the 400 meter (52.48a); and Jr. Sam Taylor, who placed first in the 1600 meter (4.56.42a).amsdell was stuck at a' 6'2 jump and was looking to get higher. Stating, “I hadn't jumped that high in months; I had plateaued at' 6'2. It feels good to beat my goals. Ramsdell went up to 6’4” on his jump Tuesday. Girls Varsity West SoccerThe Zeeland West Girls’ Varsity Soccer team lost to East in a conference game by a score of 0-1 on April 28. Their Head Coach, Ben Hondorp, said, “We defended well for most of the match, putting out fires and managing the pressure put on by East, but we struggled to find any sort of rhythm and lacked connectivity on offense. East is a good team., They were the more aggressive, assertive, and decisive team and deserved the win. We exerted a lot of energy in the first half, and kind of ran out of gas in the second half. We did generate a couple of really good chances, just could not find the back of the net. I’m proud of our team's effort, just fell short.” There were no goals for the girls of Zeeland West, but they fought hard, especially with a couple of their key players out due to injury. Girls Varsity West SoccerThe Zeeland West Girls’ Varsity Soccer team beat Holland in a conference game by a score of 3-0 on April 25. Their Head Coach, Ben Hondorp, said, “We played really well on Friday against Holland. One of our better overall matches of the season. We possessed well in the midfield and created several really good chances. We were patient and poised with our attack, pushing numbers forward and creating combinations that made Holland scramble. Defensively, we were solid and didn’t really give up many quality looks at goal. Stand out performers for the Dux included Jr. Amaya Brott, who set a season record and finished 2nd in 300m hurdles. Soph. Kaila Keeler set a PR in the 3200m. Coach Aaron Kenemer stated, “In general I just thought we had a competitive spirit today with lots of PR’s and encouragement from the team. We are having fun here and we can see the team cheering each other on.” Brott said, “I thought my meet today went well, especially in the 300m hurdles. I got a season record which I am proud of. The team is always very encouraging and it motivates me to push myself.”

Zeeland West player Saige Canfield said, “Going into this game, we knew from past experience it would be one of our easier games, but we still put our best foot forward and pushed until the end. We tried out new things and let girls who haven't scored yet get a chance to. Boys and Girls Varsity West TrackThe Zeeland West Boys Varsity Track team placed 4th at the GR Elite Challenge at Houseman Field on Saturday morning. The DUX placed top 10 in most of the events and got PR’s left and right. Getting 3rd in the 4x100 with a time of 43.90 was Srs. Keaton Hendricks, Trey Sloothak, Jr. Clayton Ramsdell, and Soph. Brandon Holman. Hendricks placed 1st with a distance of 21-10.00 and Sloothak placed 2nd with a distance of 21-01.00 in long jump. Varsity Head Coach Phil Hoover commented, “We competed well today as a team. The weather started off cold but slowly got warmer allowing the boys to get some PR’s. Girls Varsity Water Polo Co-opZeeland Girls Water Polo team lost to Hudsonville 2-18 at the Zeeland West Natatorium on Thursday night. Jr. Peyton Weenum scored one impressive goal for the team. Coach Geschwendt said,”We played a very good team and struggled to move the ball around, but we fought the entire time even when we lost our goalie in the third quarter. We learned a lot as a team and got better.” Playing the number two team in the state is difficult, but Zeeland played a good game and held strong. Fr. Their Head Coach, Ben Hondorp, said, “The Spring Lake match was a good test for us against a team that won a state title last year. Defensively, we held our own against one of the best teams in West Michigan, limiting chances and disrupting their rhythm. Offensively, we capitalized on two key opportunities in key moments of the match to secure the win. Jordyn Klaasen hit a laser that went through the fingertips of their keeper before finding the side netting, giving us a 1-0 lead. Spring Lake responded with a goal of their own when we failed to clear a ball out of the box. But our resiliency and persistence paid off as a clever combination play involving a string of 6-8 passes broke Alexis Glennie free behind their back line. Girls Varsity Water Polo Co-opZeeland Girls Water polo lost to East Kentwood 6-12 on Tuesday, April 22, at the Zeeland Natatorium. The game started close with lots of back-and-forth movement; however, as the game went on, East Kentwood began to get ahead, and Zeeland struggled to catch up. Coach Zac Geschwedt shared, “We played a really competitive game. That was probably our best game of the season in terms of doing all the little things right. It was tied 5-5 midway through the third quarter, and we just kind of ran out of gas. That’s part of having a small team this year, but I am very happy with the way the girls played, and we’ll continue to get better.” The highest contributor was Soph. Molly Meyering with 3 goals. Next highest was Sr. Ava Levandoski, scoring 2 goals. Ava Levandoski commented, “We played really well. We scored some good goals and had really good defense. It was an unfortunate loss, but we played really well and I’m proud of our team.”

Girls Varsity Lacrosse - Co-opThe Zeeland Girls Lacrosse Team lost to Hudsonville 15-19 at home Wednesday night. Zeeland had a slow start in what eventually became a high-scoring game with only a single goal in the first quarter scored by Soph. Audrina Knoper. The game started to speed up in the second quarter as Zeeland scored four additional goals, ending the half with a score of 5-7. The game stayed extremely competitive in the second half as Zeeland flexed their offensive prowess, finishing the game with a season high 15 goals.
